Audible is Amazon’s latest online platform dedicated to Audiobooks. Quite similar to the online Kindle store, it enables you to buy thousands of audiobooks and to listen to them on diverse devices. Here’s how you can get it for free.
Sign up for the Audible free trial
The first option is to sign up for the 30-day free trial. To do so, you only need an Amazon account which you use to sign up to Audible. You will then be able to experience it freely for a month. The trial also enables you to download your first book for free, choosing from the 200,000 available best-sellers, with no price restriction.
A subscription to Audible grants you one credit each month. Credits can be used to purchase audiobooks. Once the 30 day period has passed, you will be charged £7.99 a month, or you can simply cancel the trial before the end date. Despite cancelling, you will still be able to have access to all the books you downloaded during the trial.
Get Audible for free with Amazon Prime
Another option is to get Audible for free from Amazon Prime. If you already have a Prime subscription, you are eligible for a 3 month free trial for Audible (if you don’t, but are interested, check out our complete guide to Amazon Prime).
After signing up with your Amazon account, this trial will provide you with 3 free books, one credit a month, and the same free cancellation option. If you choose not to cancel, you will be charged a the same £7.99 a month once the 90 days have passed.
You’ll have noticed that unlike streaming platforms such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, Audible does not offer you access to unlimited content. With the credit you receive each month, you can get one book for free.
Most audiobooks are a lot more expensive than the £7.99 that your membership will cost you, so you will still be able to save money on the transaction. Note that if you want to purchase more books, you will need to pay extra (most audiobooks seem to cost around £20).
Once you have subscribed to Audible, you can access your Library on multiple devices, just like on Kindle.
To use Audible on your smartphone or tablet, simply download the free Audible app. Sign in with your Amazon or Amazon Prime account, and download your favourite audiobooks from the ‘Choices’ section of the app. Then, the press plays to enjoy your purchases.
To access your library on Mac or PC, you will also need to log in with your Amazon account. Then, you will be asked to download the Audible Manager. Every audiobook you buy will appear in your Library on Audible Manager so that you can access it without the internet. You can also listen from your online Library, simply by pressing play in the cloud player.
Audible also works very well with Amazon Echo. All you need to do to access your library from Echo is make sure that it is switched on and that you’re logged in to your Amazon account. Then, simply ask Alexa to play your audiobook. You can control your listening experience by asking Alexa to ‘pause’, ‘resume’, ‘go forward’ or ‘skip a chapter’.
